Getting started

Who can join the community

The community is for those interested in improving and innovating in how cancer care is organised and delivered. It’s for:

  • Members of cancer-specific multi-disciplinary teams involved in breast, bowel, oesophageal or lung cancer care
  • Operational and clinical leads, including trust staff, those from Cancer Alliances, and those with policy responsibilities
  • Data and analytics staff, including those involved in national cancer audits and local data

The community offers a number of “spaces” that may have additional eligibility questions to answer before admission.

How do I join the community?

Register on the homepage https:\\cancer.thiscovery.org  If you need further information see the User Guide. The community administration team will review your request, and you'll get an email when your account is approved. Once that’s done, click on the ‘Spaces’ tab in the top navigation bar. You’ll see a list of available spaces you may be eligible to join. Select the ones you're interested in and complete the registration questions to request access.

Why do I need to register?

We are creating an online community of members. Registration is important to taking part in community activities and makes it is easier to keep members safe and secure online.

Is there a membership fee?

No, membership is completely free. No one should be asking you to pay for membership or any other service in the community. If this happens, report it to cando@thisinstitute.cam.ac.uk immediately.

What if my registration isn't approved?

Approval is based on specific criteria to ensure only those who are eligible are admitted. If we say no, you'll get an email to say so. Contact cando@thisinstitute.cam.ac.uk if you think there's been an error.

Can I sign in with the same account I use for the Thiscovery survey platform or other Thiscovery communities?

No, you cannot use the same login. Each Thiscovery platform operates on a unique URL and is managed separately for security and data integrity reasons. This means you’ll need to create a new account for each platform you access.

What should I do if I forget my password?

If you forget your password, click the “Forgot your password?” link on the login page. Enter your email and a password reset link will be sent. If you don’t receive the email or the link doesn’t work, please contact us at cando@thisinstitute.cam.ac.uk

 for assistance.

What should I do if my verification code has not come through? In most cases, your verification code should arrive straight away, but occasionally there may be a short delay. If it has still not arrived after a few minutes;
  • Check your spam or junk folder. Sometimes verification emails can be filtered incorrectly by your email provider. Please check your spam/junk folders and any other filtered inboxes
  • Make sure you entered the correct email address when signing in.
  • If you still haven’t received your code, please email us at cando@thisinstitute.cam.ac.uk and we’ll be happy to help.

To avoid next time, when logging in, tick the option to Remember me”. This will reduce how often you need to enter a verification code, as long as you’re using the same browser and device.

Using the platform

How often should I check the community?

As often as feels valuable to you. You’ll get summary emails highlighting updates, so you won't miss important posts and news. You can change your notification settings on your profile.

How do I adjust alerts and notifications?

Click your profile picture (top right) → Settings → Notifications. Choose which types of community activity you want to know about, and how you want to know about it.

How do I adjust email summaries?

Click your profile picture (top right) → Settings → Email summaries.  Choose how often you want summaries and what you want these to cover. We recommend weekly summaries to start.

What are "spaces" and how do I join them?

Spaces are special areas focused on specific topics. They provide members with a structured environment to collaborate, share insights, and engage in relevant discussions. You may automatically belong to some spaces, while others may require you to request access. Some are private and can only be joined by those meeting specific criteria (e.g. working at a particular organisation). Look for the "Join" buttons on the Spaces page.

Can I use this on my mobile device?

Yes, the platform works well on smartphones and tablets. Use updated versions of Chrome, Safari, or Firefox for the best experience.

What’s the difference between following a space and joining a space?

Joining a space makes you a member of that space. You can access all its content and participate in discussions and other activities on the space. You may be asked for some eligibility questions before joining the space.

Following a Space means you do not become a member. You will be able to see public content (if available) but cannot actively participate unless you join.

Content and taking part

What can I do here?

Take part in discussions, share materials, ask questions, access materials, take part in ‘asks’ - short activities to gather ideas, and contribute to the shared learning

How do I start a chat?

Go to the right space. Look for "Post” at the top of the Stream. Choose a clear, specific title. Give enough background for useful responses. Add the right topic tags if relevant.

Who can see my posts?

Other community members in the same spaces can see your posts and profile information. You can control what appears in your profile through your privacy settings.
